The Sirens of the Sea Mardi Gras Society was founded in 2002. As with many other organizations it all starts with an idea. Founding members lead by Anne Mitchell and including Oliveth Archer, Linda Pacatte, Wilma Trent and Allyson Walters decided that since there was an all male Mardi Gras Krewe in Orange Beach, an all female krewe was needed. The five founding members met on Tuesday, May 7th ,2002 to begin planning the organization. At this meeting the name for the Society was chosen along with the Emblem, a Mermaid. The organization is patterned after a group of mythical goddesses who lived on an island in the sea.
The membership is made up of women interested in business and civic affairs who like to have fun. A strong bond of camaraderie among these “Mermaid Sisters” has formed through monthly meetings, “fun”raising events, including Night at the Races, Monte Carlo Night and a Sock Hop, a monthly Birthday Bash and involvement in community activities. The Society has adopted a mile of beach for the annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup, helping to keep the area’s beautiful beaches clean and pristine. Members are involved in many other community activities.
Our annual Mardi Gras Ball is a most gala and fun event. We parade each year on “Fat Tuesday” in the Gulf Shores Parade in the morning and Orange Beach Parade in the afternoon. The Queen’s float is patterned after a mermaid holding a large pearl. The float carrying the Emblem is led by five colorful seahorses. The Sirens in with their custom designed costumes line the decks of the floats loaded with a multitude of “throws”. Our most sought after throws are the pearl beads. |
